Millions of years ago, an ancient and now extinct race sought save the dying human race. This ancient race departed Earth in a small craft, and traveled to the furthest regions of unknown space. Here, in the system of Aupitao, they began construction on four installations known as Arks.
Each Ark was to be unique in some way, but all would follow similar models and programming. The ancient race, who considered themselves "The Masters", built thousands of intelligent sentient units they named Watchers, who in addition to helping in the construction of the four Arks, would oversee the population and development of the Arks.
Each Ark is made up of three wing like structures that branch off of a central vertex. Each of the wings and the center vertex are connected by a complex network of tunnels and bridges, which serve as maintenance tunnels leading between the different wings. Besides these tunnels, there is no way to reach any of the three wings from the center vertex.
Each wing is a long and thin curved structure featuring it's own unique environment and climate. The central vertex on each installation is a shaped like a half-sphere with the curved side being underneath the rest of the Ark. Like each of the wings, the central vertex also features it's own climate and terrain, just like the surface of Earth.
All of the Arks face inward towards the Sun, and orbit around it constantly, only being shaded into night when the Ark's wing's fold inward together.
The Arks, upon their initial construction, were all synchronized and mirrored in location around a single sun known as Solistis, giving them all the same age and time. The Masters intentionally synchronized the Arks, so that the Watchers could better monitor the Ark's development, evolution and status.
Over countless Eons, the subsequent generations of The Makers continued to finalize the Arks, unknowing of the evolution that took place on the nearly completed installations. In time, after generations of evolution, several races came to being on the various Arks, each one unique to it's specific region.
The Makers, unaware of such evolution and rapid development, were caught off guard when the primitive races openly attacked them. On each of the various Arks, the Maker's quickly fell to the native species and races, leaving only the Watcher's behind to continue the construction of the Arks. Countless generations later, after the completion of the Arks, and the Watchers too have seemingly disappeared from view, leaving the blossoming races and species to fend for themselves on the four Arks.
Thousands of years later, all knowledge of the Masters, the Watchers the actual structure of the Arks had been erased from the history of each of the primitive races, and they began to further evolve and develop, shaping their own civilizations into the Arks.
Today, the races existing on the four Arks are locked in a battle for survival against both the elements, the neighboring races and even against their own people as societies continue to grow. Still to this day, none of the races are aware of what exactly the live on, it's purpose, and it's capabilities.
